Friends Monthly Educational Meeting

The Friends of the Chassahowitzka River invites the public to our monthly educational meeting Aug 20th, Tuesday, 7 pm. Our meeting’ program will host Joyce Palmer, Manager of the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge Complex. This Complex includes 5 refuges: Crystal River, Chassahowitzka, Egmont Key, Pinellas, and Passage Key. She manages a multi-disciplinary staff that oversees daily operations for a heavily visited refuge complex, a large volunteer corps, and two active and influential Friends group. Joyce has worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for 20 years on natural resource management issues, including coastal Louisiana restoration and endangered species management with the Lafayette Ecological Services Office, on the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan with the South Florida Ecological Services Office, and working at multiple refuges in central and south Florida.
Joyce earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Ecology and Management at the University of Florida (Go Gators!) and her master’s degree at the University of Missouri. Her professional interests and expertise focus on wetland habitats in freshwater, coastal and marine environments, and their associated fish and wildlife resources. In her free time, Joyce enjoys traveling, birdwatching, and spending time outdoors with her husband and three children. She and her family love Citrus County and enjoy exploring the Nature Coast.
The Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge is managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and was established in 1943 as a migratory bird sanctuary. The refuge supports over 300 species of wildlife within its’ 30,843-acre mosaic of estuarine and upland habitats. Joyce will introduce us to the refuge, some of the wildlife that lives there, and how it is managed. Come learn more about our NWR.

The Friends of the Chassahowitzka River is a grassroots group dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the Chassahowitzka River, its springs, springshed, and flora and fauna. Our focus is the conservation of the natural beauty and ecological health of the Chassahowitzka River! This includes litter cleanups, native ecosystem restoration, and river restoration projects! Please join us in our grassroots endeavors!
